Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Tutator Forward is an in-kind grant program for organizations that are working to make a positive impact on society or the environment. We work with the grantee organizations to understand their needs and requirements, and we develop a custom software solution that can help them to achieve their goals.
No, Tutator Forward is an in-kind grant, meaning we do not give financial support. Instead, we will work with grantees to develop a custom software solution for their social or environmental projects. The development of the software will be done at no cost for the grantees.
No, we do not give out hardware of any kind. We develop a software solution for the grantee organizations, who must prove that they have the necessary hardware to run the software or be able to acquire it.
You have to understand that our grant is NOT a cash grant. Once a grantee has been selected, we will allocate resources to develop a custom software application based on their specifications. The size of the grant is determined by the complexity of the project, typically ranging from 5,000 to 20,000 hours of engineering time.
The duration of the grant varies depending on the complexity of the project and the availability of the grantee’s staff to support it. Typically, projects last between 6 to 12 months, but for more complex projects, the duration can extend to as long as 18 months.
After the development of the software is completed and it has been deployed, we provide a 6-month warranty period. During this period, we offer 2nd level support and will address any issues that may arise in the software.
Beyond the 6-month warranty period, the grantee has the option to purchase a support contract.
It’s important to note that the grantee is responsible for all expenses related to hosting the software, including servers, administration, network, and computers, as well as providing first-level support. We encourage potential grantees to factor these expenses into their considerations.
Our software is not open source, meaning that the source code is not publicly available for modification or redistribution. However, we offer a free license for our software, allowing users to utilize, install, and access it without any additional charges. This license grants you the rights to use our software for your intended purpose, ensuring that you can effectively leverage its features and functionalities.
While we grant access to the source code to grant beneficiaries, it is important to note that, in the event of any modifications, we will not be able to provide support or assistance to address any issues that may arise as a result of such alterations.
Yes, through our platform we can create mobile applications or integrate mobile applications to the projects.

Our grant is flexible and supports both ongoing projects and new initiatives. However, it’s important to note that while we can assist with ongoing projects, we do not take over the development of existing software. This is because we cannot guarantee the quality or functionality of legacy software applications. Instead, we focus on working with grantees to develop new software applications or enhance existing projects to meet their specific needs.
Yes, you can apply even if your organization doesn’t have an IT admin on staff. Please note that if you are awarded a Tutator Forward grant, one of the requirements is to have an IT admin.
Past winners who didn’t have one on staff have opted for hiring an external IT admin on an hourly contract basis, as it doesn’t need to be a full-time position.
The process for maintenance work after we assist in creating a software includes the following steps:
- Training: Once the software is ready to deploy, we provide training for the grantee’s staff. Typically, we follow a “train the trainers” approach, which is more efficient for everyone involved.
- Warranty Period: We offer a 6-month warranty period during which we provide comprehensive 2nd level support and address any defects or issues in the software. This ensures that the software operates smoothly during the initial post-deployment phase.
- Service Contract Option: After the 6-month warranty period, the grantee has the option to purchase a service contract. This service contract can provide continued support, maintenance, and updates to the software, ensuring its long-term functionality and stability.
In summary, the process involves training, a warranty period with full support, and the flexibility to opt for a service contract for ongoing maintenance and support as needed.
We do not provide training for individuals looking to become IT Administrators. However, we do offer training for IT Administrators to effectively manage the applications we develop and install. If your organization requires an IT administrator, we can recommend individuals who can fulfill this role on a remote, hourly contract basis.
Our aim is to promote innovation and social impact without any financial limitations. If you receive a grant from Tutator Forward, you will have access to the software source code at no additional licensing cost.
Security is a top priority in our software platform. We provide applications that align with your specific security needs. Our platform offers a comprehensive range of built-in security features, including multi-factor authentication, keylogger protection, digital document signing, IP location and VPN detection, restriction of multiple logins, activity logs, account blocking, session timeouts, and data anonymization.
Yes, Tutator ensures the protection of both the organization’s and Tutator’s know-how by signing a confidentiality agreement at the outset of each project. The objective of this agreement is not to restrict but to safeguard the work of each institution. Furthermore, regarding the information entered into the software, rest assured that we will never have access to it
